A 49-year-old woman died Wednesday after being struck by a pickup truck near a bus stop on a busy Charles County highway, authorities said today.

Michelle Thornton of Mechanicsville in St. Mary's County was waiting for a bus along Route 301 in White Plains with her boyfriend when the two began arguing, according to the Charles County Sheriff's Office. Thornton entered the road and was struck by north-bound car at about 8 p.m.

She was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are still investigating how she ended up in the road. The name of the 39-year-old boyfriend was not released.

The driver of the Dodge Dakota, a 62-year-old Charles resident, stopped and waited until police arrived at the scene. The woman's boyfriend also remained at the scene, police say. No charges have been filed.
