Marissa Coleman scored 17 points and Lynetta Kizer added 16 to help No. 10 Maryland top Illinois, 79-52, last night in the Caribbean Challenge in Cancun, Mexico.

Kristi Toliver had 11 of her 15 points in the first half as the Terrapins (6-1) used a 32-9 run to take a 37-12 lead with 3 minutes 28 seconds left. Toliver hit two three-pointers and had a three-point play during the spurt.

Illinois trimmed the deficit to 39-23 at the break, but Maryland started the second half with a 16-4 run to put the game away.

Jenna Smith scored 21 points for Illinois (3-4).

· VIRGINIA 65, UTAH 57: Whitney Edwards scored 15 points to help the No. 16 Cavaliers (4-1) defeat the Utes (1-3) in the first game of the three-day WBCA Classic in Milwaukee.

Britnee Miller scored 13 and Aisha Mohammed had 11 points for Virginia, which scored the first 10 points of the second half for a 38-22 lead.

· LOUISVILLE 73, ALABAMA 56: Angel McCoughtry scored 28 points and the No. 7 Cardinals beat the Crimson Tide in the first round of the Nugget Classic in Reno, Nev.

· STANFORD 78, PURDUE 70: Jayne Appel scored eight straight points in overtime to lift the No. 5 Cardinal over the No. 19 Boilermakers (3-1) in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Classic in Honolulu.
