The Redskins averted disaster on a ragged screen play and were forced to punt when Chris Cooley gained just six yards on a third and seven. The Giants did no better, punting it right back after a third-down pass went through Smith's hands. The Redskins again came up a yard short on third down and saw their hopes nearly extinguished when Portis was stuffed on fourth down in Washington territory. Three Jacobs runs put the Giants in field goal range, and John Carney connected from 39 yards. Down 16, the Redskins turned to the no-huddle offense and moved into Giants territory, with Campbell scrambling for one first down and throwing for another. But another fourth-down attempt fizzled, this time when Campbell and Randle El failed to connect.
