A federal grand jury in Maryland indicted a former third-grade teacher at an elite private Washington school on a child-pornography charge yesterday.

Eric Toth, 26, has been missing since last summer and is considered a fugitive despite a suicide note found in his car, according to federal authorities. If convicted of the single count of production of child pornography, Toth could face between 15 and 30 years in prison.

For three years, Toth taught at the 380-student Beauvoir School, on the grounds of Washington National Cathedral. In June, another teacher found a sexually explicit image of at least one young boy on a camera in Toth's possession.

School administrators escorted Toth off the campus, and he fled the area.

He became the subject of an FBI search, and the case was featured on a recent episode of TV's "America's Most Wanted."

Department of Justice officials would not comment on whether the image found on Toth's camera was the subject of the indictment, which alleges that he persuaded or coerced a minor to "engage in sexually explicit conduct."

According to the indictment, the child pornography was produced in Maryland and elsewhere.

In August, Toth's car was found at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, and a note inside suggested that he had committed suicide in a nearby lake. But no body was found, authorities said.

Beauvoir, an elementary school, is part of the National Cathedral Foundation, which also includes St. Albans School for Boys and the National Cathedral School, for girls.

Katharine Weymouth, publisher of The Washington Post and chief executive of Washington Post Media, became a member of Beauvoir's Board of Trustees this year.
