The Dallas Cowboys reportedly expect LB DeMarcus Ware to practice this week. They're less certain about the status of RB Marion Barber. Both were hurt during a Thanksgiving triumph over the Seattle Seahawks.
Ware hyperextended his knee, and Barber dislocated his toe. MRI exams showed no serious injury to either player, and yesterday Coach Wade Phillips said both were day-to-day. Neither player practiced yesterday. The Cowboys play at Pittsburgh on Sunday.
According to the Associated Press, Phillips said of the prospects of Barber practicing this week: "It depends on what the doctors say. We want to make sure he can obviously do the things he needs to do. How long that takes and what we have to do as far as practice is concerned, I don't know. Earlier, [the doctors] said he would have to stay out during the week, but I don't know if that is the case or not."
· LONDON CALLING: The New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers will play each other in London next season, the NFL announced yesterday.
The game is scheduled for Oct. 25 at Wembley Stadium.
"Over the past two years, we have seen first-hand the excitement that exists for our sport in the UK," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a written statement released by the league. "The games have helped us to deepen our connection with our UK fans as well as create new ones. We are looking forward to another outstanding game in 2009."
It will be the third straight year a regular season game will have been played at Wembley Stadium as part of the NFL's efforts to expand its global popularity.
This season's game drew a crowd of 83,226 to the New Orleans Saints' 37-32 triumph over the San Diego Chargers on Oct. 26. After the win, Saints Coach Sean Payton was critical of the field conditions and his team's travel arrangements.
· DOLPHINS: LG Justin Smiley broke his right leg during early in Sunday's triumph over the St. Louis Rams and will be out for the rest of the season.
Smiley had been a steadying influence on the Dolphins' line and on rookie LT Jake Long in particular. His loss came a week after the team lost leading WR Greg Camarillo to a season-ending knee injury. Andy Alleman took over at left guard Sunday.
· LIONS: Winless Detroit signed WR Keary Colbert and placed WR Mike Furrey on the injured reserve list, ending his season, because of a concussion.
· BUCCANEERS: Defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin declined to address reports he will join his son, Lane, on the coaching staff at the University of Tennessee.
"It's all just speculation," Kiffin said after Sunday's win over the New Orleans Saints, according to the St. Petersburg Times.
