Born June 1, 1937, in Memphis. Divides his time between Charleston, Miss., and New York City.

Career highlights: He won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in "Million Dollar Baby" (2005), and received Oscar nominations for his roles in "Street Smart" (1987), "Driving Miss Daisy" (1989) and "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994). Other film highlights include "Amistad" (1997) and the box office successes "Se7en" (1995), "The Bucket List" (2007) and "Bruce Almighty" (2003), in which he played God.

Career lowlights: Freeman starred in the misfires "Moll Flanders" (1996) and "The Bonfire of the Vanities" (1990).
