Career highlights: Fourteen No. 1 country singles, including 1980's "He Stopped Loving Her Today," a million-seller and recipient of the Grammy Hall of Fame Award. Two-time Country Music Association male vocalist of the year and 1992 inductee into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Generally considered one of the greatest singers in the genre's history.

Career lowlights: Briefly experimented with rockabilly in the 1950s using the name "Thumper Jones." Later, missed so many concerts because of drug and alcohol binges that he became known as "No-Show Jones."
