Leonard Downie Jr., who stepped down in September as The Washington Post's executive editor, is joining the faculty of Arizona State University's Cronkite School of Journalism.

"I'm just very impressed by what they've built there," Downie said of the school, which became an independent college in 2005. He said that he was contacted by several universities but that Arizona State "seems to have the potential to make a difference in maintaining good journalism in a time of change."

Downie, whose title is professor of practice, said he will make occasional visits to the new Phoenix campus during the fall semester and be in residence there from January to May. As for his role at The Post Co., where he remains a vice president at large, he said: "I'm available for any chores they want me to perform."
