The Washington Mystics didn't lose any ground in yesterday's WNBA draft lottery, finishing the day exactly where they expected, with the second overall pick in the 2009 draft. For the first time in WNBA history, all five teams involved in the lottery were ordered according to the odds with last-place Atlanta receiving the No. 1 pick heading into its second season.
"This allows us to really refine our evaluation process [of potential players] in the offseason," said Mystics General Manager Angela Taylor, who will have five picks -- the second and ninth overall along with two in the second round and one in the third -- in the '09 draft.
"There are a lot of talented players in this draft but it's very different than, say, having a Candace Parker or a Sylvia Fowles at the top," Taylor said. "There's depth at every position and teams can really fill specific needs."
While there is no consensus top pick, some prospects who could emerge at the head of the 2009 class include twins Courtney and Ashley Paris of Oklahoma, a 6-foot-4 center and 6-3 forward, respectively; California's 6-1 forward Ashley Walker and Louisville's 6-1 forward Angel McCoughtry.
Throughout the Mystics' 10-24 season in 2008, many within the organization acknowledged the lack of a steady presence at point guard and at center, possible needs the team could seek to fill with one of its five draft picks or when the WNBA's free agency period opens Monday.
