Manassas to Raise Utility Connection Fees
The Manassas City Council on Monday approved a $5 increase to utility connection fees.
Beginning Jan. 1, the cost to install an electric meter or establish an account with the city will go to $25, as will the fee for hooking up to the water system.
Utilities Services Manager Ana Davis said the fee increase is needed to recover the costs of the Manassas Department of Utilities' new Identity Theft Prevention Program, which the department must start by May to stay in compliance with the federal Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003.
Under the program, Utilities Department officials will be able to verify the identities and Social Security numbers of residents connecting to city services, Davis said. The fee will apply to new accounts and to those who move and reconnect elsewhere in the city.
Davis said the city provides about 150 new hookups for water, electricity or both each month.
Historic Manassas Names New Director
The Historic Manassas board of directors announced Wednesday that Patty Tracy will become the nonprofit organization's new executive director.
Tracy has served as interim executive director since August and was one of 30 people a search committee reviewed for the position. Before joining Historic Manassas, which works to revitalize and promote Old Town, Tracy served as a membership director for the Prince William County-Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce and as a community relations associate for Eli Lilly and Co.
