Mobile phones will be the primary access point to the internet worldwide by 2020, according to a new study from the Pew Internet & American Life Project. The study asked a group of "internet leaders, activists and analysts" to forecast what they expect to be the major technology advances of the next decade. They agreed about what role mobile phones would take, but weren't able to predict how it will affect our lives. The panel couldn't reach consensus on whether increased "artificial and virtual reality" on mobile phones will lead to more "social tolerance, more forgiving human relations, or better home lives."
Other highlights from the report:-- While people and organizations will become more transparent, it doesn't necessarily mean there will be any more personal integrity, social tolerance or forgiveness.-- The lines between personal and work time and physical and virtual reality will erode further, leaving mixed results for social relations.
