Dog, House Abandoned

RANDOLPH PL. NW, 1-99 block. Dec. 1. Investigators from the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs requested assistance from animal control to remove a male pit bull that was left in an abandoned house that needed to be boarded up after a fire. The dog was taken to the D.C. shelter.

Boxer Rescued by Passersby

NEW YORK AVENUE AND BLADENSBURG ROAD NE, Dec. 2. An underweight dog was found wandering near a busy intersection. Passersby captured the purebred boxer and took it to the shelter, where it was held as a stray.

Three Pythons and a Dog Go Home

IOWA AVE. NW, 4000 block, Dec. 4. D.C. police executing a search warrant contacted animal control to remove three large pythons and a dog from a home. Several days later, the animals were claimed by an owner.

Visiting Italian Mastiff Captured

E ST. SE, 4300 block, Dec. 6. A large dog was seen wandering in a cemetery. Animal control officers found an aggressive, underweight Italian mastiff. It was being held as a stray.

Beagle-Basset Mix Needs a Home

18TH ST. NE, 600 block, Dec. 4. A 3-year-old beagle-basset hound mix that was found as a stray was made available for adoption.

Miniature Poodle Left at Shelter

OGLETHORPE ST. NW, 1-99 block, Dec. 1. A league employee found a dog in a carrier that had been left by a side entrance to the shelter. The 2-year-old male miniature poodle was adopted after the stray period.

No Break for Big Cat

TAYLOR ST. NE, 400 block, Dec. 10. A woman took her 25-pound cat to the league's medical center because the animal had injured its leg after "jumping off the furniture." A veterinarian took X-rays, which showed no fracture. The cat was sent home on pain medications.

Blankets and Cat Toys Needed

The Washington Animal Rescue League needs large toys for cats and new or used blankets for dog bedding. Drop off from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; or send items to the league at 71 Oglethorpe St. NW, Washington, D.C., 20011. The Washington Animal Rescue League is sponsoring a holiday drive for pets of low-income owners through Tuesday.
