A 12-pound statue of a blond baby Jesus, as well as the bolted-down crib in which it lay, were stolen from a Nativity scene in front of heavily visited Independence Hall in Philadelphia.

The creche stands near a globe bearing the words "Peace on Earth . . . From your friendly neighborhood atheists, freethinkers and humanists."

"Nobody bothered that atheist globe back there," noted former city councilman Fran Rafferty, suspiciously.

"I'm from South Philadelphia," said Monsignor Daniel Sullivan. "For the last two years, the baby Jesus has been stolen out of our manger."
