The Week of Dec. 26
When it comes to country music influences, few rival the impact made by Hank Williams. Although he died more than 50 years ago on Jan. 1, his memory is still celebrated annually at the Birchmere's Tribute to Hank Williams. This year the concert is Dec. 27 at 7:30 p.m. Grammy winners Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer will host the show, which will feature performances by Bill Kirchen, Rickie Simpkins, Robin and Linda Williams, Mark Schatz, and Dave Giegerich. 3701 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria. 800-551-7328 or http:/
The Week of Jan. 2
New Year's celebrations don't have to end after the ball drops. At least not at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore. The Ethiopian New Year Celebration on Jan. 2 from 5 to 8 p.m. will include music, dance performances, a cash bar and clothing for sale to benefit U.S. Doctors for Africa's mobile clinic initiative. The night will also be a good chance to check out the Walters's Ethiopian Art gallery. 600 N. Charles St., Baltimore. 410-547-9000 or http:/
The Week of Jan. 9
Burned out on ballet with all the "Nutcrackers" being performed this time of year? Well, by Jan. 13 we hope you are back on the ballet bandwagon just in time for St. Petersburg's Mariinsky Ballet (formerly the Kirov) performances at the Kennedy Center. The group will perform "Don Quixote," and if past visits are any indication of the troupe's popularity, purchase tickets now before they sell out. Performances are Jan. 13-16 at 7:30 p.m., Jan. 17 at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m., and Jan. 18 at 1:30 p.m. Kennedy Center Opera House, 2700 F St. NW. 202-467-4600 or http:/
On Stage
On sale now, on stage soon: The Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia returns to the Kennedy Center Dec. 27 through Jan. 4 with a puppet production of "Goodnight Moon" and "The Runaway Bunny," the classic children's books by Margaret Wise Brown. Tickets cost $18. Call 202-467-4600.
