In Tune With the Holidays

Saturday, December 20, 2008

A major part of the holidays is music: carolers, singalongs, concerts featuring holiday chestnuts. Where to find the sounds of the season:

· The "Messiah" Sing-Along at the Kennedy Center. Hallelujah. The annual Sing-Along attracts a formidable line of folks who camp out to get the free tickets. This year, the KenCen changes the policy a bit: The event has been returned to a date near Christmas; tickets (this time, just one per person) will be distributed two hours before the performance, rather than several days ahead of the show. Guest conductor Barry Hemphill returns for the performance, with the Opera House Orchestra and 200-voice choir.

Free (scores are $8). Tuesday at 8 p.m.; tickets distributed at 6. 2700 F St. NW. 202-467-4600 or visit http://www.kennedy-center.org.

· American Century's holiday revue. "An American Century Christmas" channels that warm 'n' fuzzy glow of the television holiday special in this two-hour show that features two hosts, a journey through (Hollywood) Christmases past, and snippets and full versions of 70-odd songs, from "White Christmas" to "Santa Baby."

$28-$32; students and seniors, $25-$29; 18 and younger free with paying adult. 8 p.m. today, Monday and Tuesday; also at 2:30 p.m. today and tomorrow. Various times through Jan. 4. Gunston Arts Center, Theater II, 2700 S. Lang St., Arlington. 703-998-4555 or visit http://www.americancentury.org.

· Jewmongous. Sean Altman once a member of the a cappella act Rockapella, now churns out shticky pop that pokes gentle fun at all things Jewish; songs include "They Tried to Kill Us (We Survived, Let's Eat)."

$20; $17 in advance. Doors at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Jammin' Java, 227 E. Maple Ave., Vienna. 703-255-1566 Ext. 8 or visit http://www.jamminjava.com.
