Malcolm Delaney scored 15 of his 25 points in the first half to lead Virginia Tech to a 64-52 victory over Columbia yesterday in the opening round of the Holiday Festival tournament at Madison Square Garden.
Delaney also had nine rebounds for the Hokies (7-4), who outrebounded the Lions, 43-32. Reserve A.D. Vassallo scored 16 points for Virginia Tech and Jeff Allen added 13.
Jason Miller led the Lions (3-6) with 12 points.
The Hokies will play in today's title game against St. John's, a 65-44 winner over Marist.
· AMERICAN 74, UMBC 61: Senior Garrison Carr scored a career-high 34 points, and the Eagles snapped a four-game losing streak by defeating the Retrievers in Catonsville, Md.
Carr hit a career-high eight three-pointers and became the 27th player in school history to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau for American (5-5), which handed Maryland-Baltimore County (5-5) its third defeat in four games.
Derrick Mercer added 13 points for American, finishing one point shy of 1,000 for his career. Senior forward Bryce Simon, returning from a knee injury suffered during last season's Patriot League tournament semifinals, made his first appearance of the season.
Darryl Proctor had 22 points and 11 rebounds for UMBC.
· CANISIUS 68, NAVY 63: Julius Coles scored 19 points and Frank Turner added 16 to spark the Golden Griffins in Buffalo.
Chris Gadley contributed 10 points and 11 rebounds for Canisius (4-7). Kaleo Kina led the Midshipmen (8-3) with 21 points, and Romeo Garcia added 11.
