A Warm Gesture in a Freezing Capital

President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush ventured into Northeast Washington today to drop off more than 100 coats collected by the White House staff for Pathways to Housing, a District program to find homes for the chronically homeless.

In the District, Pathways, which provides housing and other services to homeless people with mental illnesses, handed out the warm outerwear in behalf of the One Warm Coat campaign. The charity, a nationwide effort to help the homeless, started in San Francisco in 1992 and has distributed more than 750,000 coats, according to the project's officials.

Respress said the president's timing was perfect. "This is the first time that the White House has sponsored a coat drive through One Warm Coats, and it comes following one of the coldest nights of the year," she said.

"Laura and I are here with the mayor and other volunteers who are just trying to make a difference in one person's life," Bush said.

Who, if anyone, was huddled last night in the overcoat that had once shielded the occupant of the Oval Office was not immediately known.
