If you want something to look forward to this week, it might as well be the New Year. You're unlikely to find much sunshine in the few backward-looking economic statistics scheduled for release. On Tuesday, the S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Indices for October are expected to confirm the glum readings of other housing data from that time. Also that day, the Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index for December is due; no optimism expected there, either. On Friday, the Institute for Supply Management's national manufacturing index, based on a survey of purchasing executives, is expected to show one reason people are so gloomy. When the index dips below 50, that signals contraction. It's expected to fall to 35.4, a 2.2 percent drop from November.
