Maryland vs. Elon
When: 8 p.m. Where: Comcast Center. Records: Terrapins 9-2; Phoenix 4-4. Radio: WJFK (106.7 FM), WJZ (105.7, 1300 AM), WFMD (930 AM), WPTX (1690 AM).
BEYOND THE BASICS: As the nonconference portion of Maryland's schedule nears a close, so too does the notion that the Terrapins will hold athletic superiority against each opponent. "You have to be able to run your half-court offense, not just the basic play, but all of the options off of it," Coach Gary Williams said yesterday. "If a guy switches or shows help on a screen, what do you do? Well, you've got to know that automatically by the time you get into January and begin league games." After Elon, Maryland plays two more nonconference games before opening ACC play against Georgia Tech on Jan. 10.
INJURY UPDATE: Williams does not expect freshman F Steve Goins to play tonight because of pain in his lower left leg. Results from an MRI exam taken Friday revealed no stress fracture in the foot or ankle, and Goins returned to practice yesterday. Williams also said he expects sophomore F Jerome Burney to miss two more weeks with a stress fracture in his right foot.
THE MAIN MEN: Senior G Brett James and senior F Ola Atoyebi average a combined 31.2 points per game for the Phoenix. That's 45.6 percent of the team's average scoring output. . . . Elon Coach Ernie Nestor was the head coach at George Mason from 1988 to 1993.
