Wizards Coach Tries to Tap Into Players' Minds With Famous Quotes
Tuesday, December 30, 2008
HOUSTON, Dec. 29 -- Interim coach Ed Tapscott is always on the lookout for ways to inspire and motivate his team. One thing he likes to do is find inspirational quotes or passages from famous thinkers.
For instance, prior to Monday's game at Houston, Tapscott jotted down the following Aristotle quote on the dry-erase board in the middle of the locker room at the Toyota Center: "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act but a habit."
Tapscott pulls the quotes from wherever he finds them.
"I do like quotes and I do like themes that can guys can grasp on to," Tapscott said. "It says something when the same types of values and culture you speak to come with the imprint of a famous name."
Fourth-year forward Andray Blatche was among the players who stopped and took note of the Aristotle quote before the game.
"Excellence is a habit," Blatche said. "I like that."
· HORNETS NEXT: New Orleans was the site of one of the Wizards' most thrilling wins last season. With the score tied and the clock winding down in regulation Feb. 25 at New Orleans Arena, DeShawn Stevenson drained a buzzer-beating three-pointer to give the Wizards a 95-92 victory.
This season, New Orleans (18-9) has won two straight and six of its last eight. Tuesday night's meeting will be the first since a Dec. 10 trade sent guard Antonio Daniels to the Hornets and brought guards Mike James and Javaris Crittenton to Washington. Daniels has seen regular duty backing up Chris Paul.
