CONVENTION CENTER
$10 Million Contract Given to Add Meeting Space
A $10 million contract has been awarded to add 40,000 square feet of meeting space to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, District officials said yesterday.
The convention center, which opened in 2003, has 150,000 square feet of meeting space, 703,000 square feet of exhibition space and 52,000 square feet of ballroom space. It generates about $500 million annually.
Gregory O'Dell, general manager and chief executive of the Washington Convention Center Authority, said the new project is a wise investment because "the demand for additional space is high."
The contract was awarded to the Columbia/Forrester Joint Venture, a team consisting of District-based Columbia Enterprises and Forrester Construction of Rockville. The project is scheduled to begin in the spring and be completed by the end of 2009.
