After three decades on the D.C. Council and school board, after the death of her husband and after losing four campaigns for mayor, council member Carol Schwartz (R-At Large) lost the GOP primary in September to newcomer Patrick Mara, who at 32 is half her age. She decided to wage a write-in campaign during the general election. She lost that, too. Schwartz, seen posting signs on Election Day reminding voters of her write-in effort, served four terms as the council's only elected Republican. In an interview last month on her last day on the council, Schwartz said, "I am sad. I can't say that I am not sad. People come up to me and say, 'How are you?' And I say, 'I have been better.' I was here until 10 o'clock last night, packing up my office. So it is a tough time for me. I am really proud of my years here."
