Fashionable Skirts

Thursday, January 1, 2009

We don't get to say it often in fashion, but: the bigger the better.

Full, flouncy skirts, the kind with layers of tulle underneath, or thick pleats and folds, instantly draw eyes to your hourglass figure -- even if you don't have one.

You don't have to be afraid to draw attention to your hips during these post-pumpkin-pie days. These skirts' secret weapon is their exaggerated shape, which will hide almost every holiday pound between now and, well, whenever you get back on the elliptical.

The dressiest of these skirts, such as French Connection's black-and-gold "Tallulah" number, are so glamorously over-the-top they could pass for couture -- and would be perfect for, say, an inaugural party.

More subdued -- but still short and sassy -- options from Express and Kensie paired with tights and booties would be ideal for a dinner date or ladies' night out.

When you choose a skirt with volume, you might want to go for the fitted look up top. Tuck in your blouse and wear a tailored jacket or cinch your waist with a wide belt. You need to be at least partly battened down to keep a gust of wind from carrying you away.
