MILWAUKEE -- Twelve people were plucked from the ice off Green Bay on Thursday after a passing freighter and heavy winds created a crack six miles long and 400 to 500 feet wide that separated them from the shore, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. The 12 all had been ice fishing, some about a mile off the shore.

Mine Owner Loses Ruling

SALT LAKE CITY -- A judge has ordered a coal company to pay full benefits to the family of one of the six miners killed in the 2007 collapse of the Crandall Canyon mine. The man's family said the 22-year-old miner was the main source of support for his disabled father, his mother and two young siblings in Ensenada, Mexico. The companies said they shouldn't have to pay the full benefit amount because Payan had two other siblings working in Utah to help the family.
