Wolfgang Loitzl of Austria won the third leg of the Four Hills ski jumping tournament in Innsbruck, Austria, increasing his lead in the event standings. Loitzl captured his second Four Hills event with jumps of 126.5 and 128.5 meters. He defeated fellow Austrian Gregor Schlierenzauer by 0.7 of a point. . . .

Two-time Olympic champion Armin Zoeggler of Italy won a luge race in Koenigssee, Germany, on his 35th birthday to extend his overall lead in the World Cup standings. Zoeggler finished in 1:35.458, 0.36 ahead of David Moeller of Germany.

· SOCCER: Defending champion Manchester United cruised to a 3-0 victory at second-tier Southampton in the FA Cup and will host Tottenham in the fourth round. United has won soccer's oldest domestic competition a record 11 times. . . . Arjen Robben fired Real Madrid to a 1-0 victory over Villarreal to maintain the defending Spanish league champion's improvement under new coach Juande Ramos.

· SAILING: British skipper Jonny Malbon retired from the Vendee Globe 'round-the-world race because of a tear in his mainsail, the 16th sailor to abandon the solo race, leaving 14 in the competition.
