Vice President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. will travel to Southwest Asia later this week, his Senate office announced yesterday.
The Democratic senator from Delaware is making the trip in his capacity as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, just days before he is set to become vice president.
For security reasons, Biden's office did not detail the trip's itinerary, but the geographic description suggests stops at such places as Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Joining Biden will be the incoming chairman of the committee, Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.), and Sens. Jack Reed (D-R.I.), Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.).
Biden spokeswoman Elizabeth Alexander said the delegation "will make it clear to foreign leaders that they are not there to speak on behalf of the U.S. government or convey policy positions for the incoming administration."
