Credentials: Gupta, 39, is a board-certified neurosurgeon who received his doctorate of medicine from the University of Michigan. In 1997, he was one of 15 White House fellows chosen to advise first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton. He joined CNN in the summer of 2001 and has reported on the war in Iraq, the tsunami in Sri Lanka and the effects of Hurricane Katrina.
What he offers: He is a widely recognized television personality who is expected to use his communication talents to promote health and wellness issues.
Vetting: Veterans of the Public Health Service, which the surgeon general heads, typically prefer a leader who has come up through the ranks of the Commissioned Corps.
