Jessica Mooney led five Commodores in double figures with 15 points, and 24th-ranked Vanderbilt beat No. 7 Tennessee, 74-58, yesterday in Nashville for only its seventh win all-time in this interstate rivalry. The win was Coach Melanie Balcomb's first against Tennessee in her seventh season at Vanderbilt.
Tennessee (12-3, 1-1 Southeastern Conference) has dominated this series between schools separated by 190 miles along Interstate 40, winning the last 16 and 52 of the first 58 by the Lady Vols' count. This loss keeps Coach Pat Summitt stuck on 995 wins as she closes in on 1,000 for her career.
Vanderbilt (13-4, 2-0) was the preseason pick to win the SEC title, and the Commodores used their speed and experience to grab their first win over the Lady Vols since Feb. 2, 2002.
· LOUISVILLE 64, RUTGERS 59: Angel McCoughtry scored 31 points -- including four free throws in the final 20 seconds -- as the No. 10 Cardinals held off the visiting No. 17 Scarlet Knights.
Louisville (16-1, 3-0 Big East) won its 11th straight behind its all-American forward and a suffocating defense that held struggling Rutgers (8-5, 0-2) to 36 percent shooting and forced 21 turnovers.
· VIRGINIA 77, WAKE FOREST 59: Monica Wright scored 20 points and the No. 15 Cavaliers rebounded from a sluggish start to beat the visiting Demon Deacons (12-3, 0-2 ACC).
Wright, who also had nine rebounds, scored seven points and senior forward Lyndra Littles added eight of her 19 points for Virginia (14-2, 1-0) during a 24-0 run in the final minutes of the game.
· AUBURN 81, FLORIDA 65: The Tigers passed their first test in the SEC with a rout of the visiting Gators.
DeWanna Bonner scored 29 points, leading No. 9 Auburn (17-0, 2-0) to a victory over No. 18 Florida (15-2, 1-1) in front of 6,090 fans -- the seventh-largest total ever to see the Tigers play.
