Test Tutoring Program to Begin

A Saturday program to sharpen reading and math skills for the D.C.-CAS standardized tests this spring will return starting Jan. 24, Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) and Schools Chancellor Michelle A. Rhee announced yesterday.

Saturday Scholars is to help students whose scores indicate that they might reach proficiency with extra work. About 5,200 students in grades 3 through 6 and 7, 8 and 10 were identified by principals and invited. Others may also be invited.

The instructors will be D.C. teachers Rhee described as "high-performing."

She said initiatives such as the Saturday program are a necessity. The program will run through April 18 at 34 D.C. schools.

Gas Leak Evacuates School

A Northeast charter school was evacuated yesterday morning after a reported gas leak.

Fire officials went to the unit block of T Street after a report of a smell of gas at the City Lights charter school, said Alan Etter, spokesman for the D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department. The school was evacuated as a precaution, and classes were held elsewhere, he said. The school was reopened after repairs.
