Voters to Fill Moran's Seat

Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. today for a special election to replace former Alexandria delegate Brian Moran, who stepped down last month to run full-time for governor.

Democratic lawyer Charniele Herring and Republican congressional aide Joe Murray are facing off in the low-key contest in the heavily Democratic 46th House District, and election officials said they expected a light turnout.

Voters in western Alexandria and the Skyline area of Fairfax County can cast ballots at their usual polling places.

Son Guilty of Manslaughter

A jury yesterday found a 23-year-old Manassas area man guilty of involuntary manslaughter after he testified to accidentally killing his father during a fight last year in their home.

Ryan Stephenson, 23, said he got his father, James Stephenson, in a headlock after the two came to blows July 1 over the son's behavior and failure to mow the lawn. Ryan Stephenson called 911 after his father, 46, fell lifeless in his arms. The father was taken to a hospital by paramedics and pronounced dead.

The medical examiner said the cause of death was strangulation.
