O, the Doggerel That Might Have Been

I wanted to write an inaugural poem

For Barack Obama to see,

So I called Elizabeth Alexander,

Old friend and Yale professor,

And the poet Obama chose -- over me!

What exactly is an 'occasional poem'? I asked.

Would you help me write one, too?

Just meditate on the inaugural, she replied.
