Here's a look at some of the events in Southern Maryland marking Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama.
Today
Calvert County's tribute to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.: The 25th annual celebration features entertainment from the county's high schools and a musical group from Central High School in Prince George's County, among others. Speakers will include Calvert District Court Judge E. Gregory Wells, the first African American judge in Southern Maryland; John Zaluski, a county resident; and local pastors Yolanda Powell of Dominion International Ministries and Kenneth Phelps of All Saints Episcopal Church. 6 p.m., Huntingtown High School auditorium, 4125 Solomons Island Rd. "Dream," an art exhibit and concert: Hosted by Charles County Commissioner Reuben B. Collins II (D-Waldorf), featuring original Barack Obama-themed artwork and live music by the ER2 Band. The fifth annual Southern Maryland Martin Luther King Jr. prayer breakfast: Guest speakers will be U.S. Rep. Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.); Janice Talbert Walthour, an educator, NAACP activist and poet; and Garrey Dennie, a professor at St. Mary's College of Maryland and a former speechwriter for Nelson Mandela. The event will also feature a performance by the St. Peter Claver Gospel Choir. The invocation and benediction will be led by Henry Briscoe, pastor of the House of Disciples International in Lexington Park. Sponsored by St. Mary's College of Maryland and the St. Mary's County Human Relations Commission. "The Obama factor: What does it mean for you?" The Leonardtown Campus Student Association will host an open forum facilitated by Chretien Guidry, assistant history professor at the College of Southern Maryland. The forum will include a review of the political history leading up to Barack Obama's election, followed by a discussion about his potential effects on domestic and foreign relations. Calvert County gala: Featuring live music, dancing, food and a large-screen video to watch inaugural activities.
