Potomac

Problem

Cohen and her family have moved into a new house and are ready to start decorating. Their 20 1/2 -by-13 1/4 -foot family room poses several challenges, including dark wood paneling and a generic fireplace, Cohen writes in an e-mail. She would like flexible seating for entertaining and supervising play dates. There should also be an area for coats and shoes.

Suggestions

A warm color palette creates a cohesive room while complementing a darker, glass-tiled fireplace and the floor. Paint the paneling the same color as the walls so they blend into the space. Add storage and build an area near the garage door with cubbies, shelves and hooks. Kid-friendly seating can be upholstered in colors that hide stains.
