Kurz Helps Villanova Knock Off No. 13 Notre Dame

Laura Kurz scored 16 points, including a layup and two free throws in the final 2 minutes 29 seconds, to lead host Villanova to a 55-48 upset yesterday over No. 13 Notre Dame.

Ashley Barlow scored 11 points and Erica Solomon grabbed 10 rebounds for Notre Dame (15-3, 4-2 Big East).

Villanova (11-8, 3-2) never trailed, taking a 30-20 lead at halftime thanks to Notre Dame's 25 percent shooting (6 of 24).

Melissa Lechlitner's three-pointer got the Irish within 49-48 with 2:54 left, but Kurz made a layup and two free throws and Maria Getty added two free throws.

· CONNECTICUT 65, CINCINNATI 34: Maya Moore scored 18 points and the top-ranked Huskies (19-0, 5-0 Big East) held the host Bearcats (13-6, 3-3) to seven points in the first half.

· PITTSBURGH 77, SYRACUSE 75: Xenia Stewart made a pull-up jumper from the right wing at the final buzzer to lift the No. 25 Panthers in Syracuse, N.Y.

Pittsburgh (14-4, 4-2 Big East) made six straight free throws to take a 75-70 lead with 1:27 to go. The Orange (13-6, 2-4) tied it after Erica Morrow swished a three-pointer and Chandrea Jones converted a driving layup with 19.7 seconds left.

Pittsburgh called a timeout with 8.6 seconds to go, and Stewart was left alone for the winner. Big East scoring leader Shavonte Zellous, who assisted on the winning basket, led the Panthers with 15 points. Jones led Syracuse with 23 points.

· TEXAS A&M 60, OKLAHOMA ST. 50: Danielle Gant scored 22 points, Takia Starks added 15 and the No. 9 Aggies topped the No. 24 Cowgirls in Stillwater, Okla.
