A blaze this morning in a two-story commercial building near Chinatown left five D.C. firefighters in need of medical care and tied up traffic for more than three hours.

The fire was reported about 7:15 a.m. in a building on the south side of the 1000 block of F Street NW, just west of 10th Street, said Alan Etter, a fire department spokesman. More than 100 firefighters battled the blaze in falling snow until about 10 a.m. One firefighter broke his hand and the others were treated for medical issues related to exertion, including elevated blood pressure.

Etter said the fire started in a vacant portion of building. A souvenir shop on the first floor sustained heavy water damage, but Etter said there were no civilian injuries.
