SALMONELLA HEARINGS PLANNED

Rep. Henry A. Waxman, right, has announced the first public hearing on the outbreak of salmonella illness that is being blamed on tainted peanut products. Waxman (D-Calif.), chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee, will hold the hearing Feb. 11. He said he wants to focus on the Georgia peanut-processing plant at the center of the investigation, which has led to a widespread recall. More than 500 people have become ill, and at least eight may have died because of salmonella infections. Among those testifying will be Stewart Parnell, president of Peanut Corporation of America, as well as representatives of two labs the company used for testing. The company shipped products that initially tested positive for salmonella bacteria after follow-up tests found no traces.
