An 18-year-old District man has been charged in connection with two recent fatal shootings: of a 17-year-old youth in Columbia Heights and a 21-year-old aspiring artist in Adams Morgan, police said this morning.

Lafonte Lurie Carlton, of Northwest Washington, was charged with second-degree murder while armed in the killing of Derrell Goins, 21, who was shot to death at 8 p.m. Dec. 10 in an alley behind the 2200 block of Champlain Street NW.

Goins, of the 600 block of Edgewood Street NE, was shot multiple times, police said in a statement. Friends said he was a talented artist who held down two jobs while taking art classes. Police and neighborhood activists said after his death that they believed Goins was shot as part of a dispute between neighborhood gangs, and apparently was targeted by mistake.

Carlton was also charged with second-degree murder while armed in the Jan. 9 shooting of Paul Dominique Jones, 17, of the 600 block of Morton Street NW. Jones was shot multiple times in the head and body at 9:15 p.m., behind a building in the 1300 block of Columbia Road NW. No additional information on that shooting was immediately available.
