Ridership Set Record On PRTC Buses Last Year

The Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission set a ridership record last year, PRTC officials said Tuesday.

PRTC's buses had more than 3.1 million passengers, up 14 percent from 2007. About 2 million of those passengers rode PRTC's OmniRide and Metro Direct commuter buses, and the rest were on the OmniLink and Cross County Connector local buses.

The buses serve residents in Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park. PRTC officials said high gas prices largely caused the spike in ridership by forcing commuters to find alternative ways to get to work.

In other PRTC news, Prince William County Supervisor Michael C. May (R-Occoquan) was appointed to a one-year term as chairman of the PRTC Board of Commissioners.

May said he will push for the passage of the federal transportation authorization bill, which would provide funding for transit agencies. May said it is also important that the state contribute to making sure residents travel safely and efficiently.

VRE Board Chooses Chairman, Other Officers

Virginia Railway Express officials announced Tuesday that Arlington County Board member Chris Zimmerman (D) has been elected chairman of the VRE Operations Board.

During its January monthly meeting, the 13-member board also elected other officers for the year: Stafford County Supervisor Paul V. Milde III (R-Aquia) as vice chairman, Fairfax County Supervisor Sharon S. Bulova (D-Braddock) as secretary and Prince William County Supervisor W.S. Covington III (R-Brentsville) as treasurer.

Zimmerman, who also serves on the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission and the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority, said he is committed to maintaining the quality of VRE's service and to finding ways to improving riders' trips, such as adding new locomotives to the fleet.

VRE officials said ridership has increased 11 percent in the past year. The commuter rail service operates trains between stations in Fredericksburg and Manassas and Union Station in the District.

Manassas Commends Youth Football Team

The Manassas Mutiny football team was honored during Monday's Manassas City Council meeting for its exceptional 2008 season.

The Junior Pee Wee team was the Virginia American Youth Football Alliance Division I league champion, the American Youth Football regional champion and runner-up at the national championship, according to city documents.

The team, open to residents of Manassas, Manassas Park and the western part of Prince William County, was made up of about two dozen boys ages 10 to 12.
