Senior Angel McCoughtry scored a career-high 43 points as No. 6 Louisville extended its best start in school history by defeating host Providence, 81-49, in a Big East Conference game yesterday.
The 43 points, which also are a single-game school record, give her 2,373 for her career. She is now the all-time scoring leader in the history of Louisville men's and women's basketball, surpassing Darrell Griffith.
Louisville (20-2, 7-1) mixed man-to-man defense with a zone and an occasional full-court press that forced Providence (8-13, 2-6) into 29 turnovers.
That combination enabled the Cardinals to score 40 points off Friar miscues.
The Friars took their only lead of the game, 30-28, on two free throws by Catherine Bove. But Louisville closed the half with a 12-0 run for a 40-30 lead at halftime.
Brittany Dorsey led Providence with 13 points.
ยท OKLAHOMA 78, MISSOURI 56: Nyeshia Stevenson and Ashley Paris each scored 14 points as the No. 2 Sooners extended their winning streak to 14 games and remained atop the Big 12 by routing the Tigers in Norman, Okla.
Oklahoma (18-2, 7-0) avenged its last loss to a Big 12 foe while sending Missouri (10-10, 1-6) to its fourth straight loss. The Tigers stunned Oklahoma in overtime in the first round of last season's conference tournament.
The Sooners next will play No. 13 Tennessee tomorrow in Oklahoma City, hoping to keep Tennessee Coach Pat Summitt from recording what would be her 1,000th career win with the Lady Vols.
Alyssa Hollins led Missouri with 17 points.
Oklahoma center Courtney Paris had 10 points and 11 rebounds in 20 minutes of playing time to extend her NCAA-record streak of consecutive double-doubles to 112 games.
