By Area 11 | Weekly Men's College Basketball Poll
Tuesday, February 3, 2009

College basketball around the D.C. area isn't pretty these days, even when you cast as wide a net as that of Dan Steinberg and his band of Atlantic 11 pollsters.

1. Va. Commonwealth (16-6)

533 (25) Next: Tomorrow at UNC Wilmington

No word yet from Anthony Grant regarding Bob Knight's request to settle the Georgia head coaching vacancy like men. (Brian Bald)

2. Virginia Tech (14-7)

502 (17) Next: Sunday vs. N.C. State

Some have called the Hokies a Jekyll and Hyde team. That may be true, but I'm pretty sure Jekyll and Hyde could have held that 16-point lead against Clemson. (Chris Chase)

3. Georgetown (12-8)

415 (8) Next: Tonight vs. Rutgers

Hasn't won a game since the second Bush administration. (Jamie Paquette)

4. VMI (17-4)

371 (7) Next: Tomorrow at Winthrop

The Big South is taking the unusual step of hiring new officials midseason to replace the dozens forced into retirement after collapsing on court at the 15-minute mark of VMI games. (Brian Bald)

5. George Mason (15-6)

354 (3) Next: Tonight vs. Hofstra

With the Patriots losing three out of four games, it's become quite apparent that even Mason Nation is not immune to these tough economic times. (Christopher Ring)

6. Maryland (14-7)

300 Next: Tonight at North Carolina

Jin Soo Kim held out of the game vs. BC for academic reasons after, when asked the cause of the Civil War, he responded, "Kathy Worthington." (Jack Lambert)

7. American (13-7)

220 (1) Next: Tomorrow vs. Army

The Eagles beat Navy last week and play Army tomorrow. Clearly, AU is trying to copy Notre Dame football and boost its record by playing all of the service academies. (Markus Videnieks)

8. Liberty (16-7)

192 (1) Next: Tomorrow at Gardner-Webb

Seth Curry went 5 for 20 in a win vs. UNC Asheville, making one of every four attempts. Or, as they say in the ACC, he shot a Greivis. (Jack Lambert)

9. Old Dominion (13-8)

94 Next: Tonight vs. Towson

After victories over James Madison and George Mason, the Monarchs continue their revenge against lesser known patriots Thomas Towson and Samuel Drexel. (Christopher Ring)

10. Mount St. Mary's (13-9)

81 Next: Thursday at Long Island

Beat up on a Wagner team made up of players who are all on opera scholarships and not aware that athletics was a part of their coursework. (Chris Bocquet)

11. Navy (15-7)

75 Next: Saturday at Bucknell

When asked why his starting center chose to shoot rather than set a screen, Billy Lange replied, "Pickin' ain't Veazey." (Bill Fitzgerald)
