Analyzing Virginia Tech's 2009 Football Recruiting Class

Thursday, February 5, 2009

Last Season: 10-4, beat Cincinnati, 20-7, in Orange Bowl.

Top Players Lost: CB Macho Harris, DE Orion Martin, LB Brett Warren, LB Purnell Sturdivant, QB Sean Glennon, PK Dustin Keys.

Needs Filled: Coach Frank Beamer, who didn't have as many scholarships available as he does most seasons, wanted defensive ends, and he received signatures from four. Watch out for Brooke Point's Lanford Collins, a late commitment who arrives as the biggest at his position.

Best in Class: Logan Thomas will likely see the field early. The 6-foot-6, 230-pound athlete from Lynchburg, Va., was rated as one of the top tight end prospects in the country but also has the potential to play wide receiver and quarterback. David Wilson, a running back from Danville, Va., was rated as one of the top tailback prospects in the country and rushed for 2,291 yards and 35 touchdowns as a senior. "He's fast, that's for sure," Beamer told the Associated Press. "I think he just has a nice running style. It's just a very natural gift for him."

Sleeper: Place kickers seldom receive Signing Day attention, but Cody Journell received a scholarship and will enter the preseason in contention to take Keys's spot.

One Who Got Away: Virginia Tech badly needed a quarterback to back up Tyrod Taylor, and Penn State-bound Kevin Newsome could have been the No. 2 signal caller and groomed as Taylor's eventual replacement.

Coach Frank Beamer: "We signed 20 of the 22 people who visited here that we offered. I think that makes a statement of Virginia Tech and what we try to sell. Once we get you here, we have a pretty good shot of you coming to school here."
