Shopper: Studs, Leather and Rocker Chic Reign This Spring

Thursday, February 5, 2009

Femininity has reigned supreme over many a recent trend, as girly ruffles, cinched waists and flirty peep-toes lent a ladylike air to the catwalks. But this spring, rough-edged rocker chic swaggers its way back to the collective forefront.

"There's something powerful about it," says Lori Parkerson, who owns the edgy 14th Street boutique Redeem. "But it can be very playful if you do it in a certain way."

The key? Identifying whether your inner tough-girl leans downtown funky or uptown classic, then selecting on-trend pieces that can be incorporated into your aesthetic.

"Everybody has to stick to what they're comfortable with, but certain aspects can be picked up by most people," Parkerson says. "That doesn't mean you have to wear leather pants, but you can wear a tight, fitted blazer and still have that sensibility."

Looking bad has never been so good -- or so easy.

What it is: Funky, vintage-inspired shapes punctuated by sharp-edged metals (think pyramid studs) or extreme embellishments (loads of zippers).
