GAINING GROUND: The Patriots did not play Wednesday, but were big winners nonetheless. Northeastern and Virginia Commonwealth, the teams then ahead of them in the CAA, suffered upset losses to William & Mary and UNC Wilmington, respectively. Drexel, then a half-game behind George Mason, also lost to a lower-place team. Those results left the Patriots tied for second with VCU and one game behind Northeastern, which will visit Patriot Center next Saturday.
ONE-SIDED AFFAIR: George Mason's winning streak against the Dukes reached 10 on Jan. 17 with a 71-57 victory in Fairfax. The Patriots went on a 7-0 run to start the game and a 10-0 spurt at the beginning of the second half, and held JMU to 31.6 percent shooting. The Dukes have not beaten the Patriots in Harrisonburg since 2004. On the road last year, Patriots G Dre Smith set an NCAA record for most three-pointers without a miss (10) during a 96-75 victory.
STATS CORNER: The Dukes are the league's best free throw shooting team (75.4 percent), with four regulars shooting 81 percent or better. The Patriots are first in field goal percentage (46.6). After losing two straight at home, JMU won two in a row on the road to move into a tie for fifth place with Old Dominion. In the past three games, freshman F Andrey Semenov (9 points, 4.5 rebounds per game) has averaged 17.3 points, making 17 of 31 field goals and all 15 free throws.
