Getting There Eagles Mere is about 4 1/2 hours from the Beltway. Take Interstate 270 north, then Route 15 north; 15 becomes 15/11 north of Harrisburg, Pa. When 11 and 15 split, follow 11, then turn left onto Route 147, which becomes I-180. Continue north on I-180, then follow Route 405 east, Route 220 north, then Route 42 north.

Where to Stay Eagles Mere Inn (Mary and Sullivan streets, 570-525-3273, has 19 rooms, starting at $179; price includes a five-course dinner and huge breakfast. Crestmont Inn (Crestmont Drive, 800-522-8767, has 15 rooms, with rates from $110, breakfast included.

Where to Eat Both inns above offer dinner in their restaurants. For excellent bar food, including chili, pasta and soups, try the Barn Restaurant and Bar (Double Run Road, 570-525-3092).

What to Do Cross-country skiing, Crystal Lake Ski Center, near Tivoli (570-584-4209, One-day adult trail fee $15, half-day $10 (seniors and children $8 for one day, $5 for half). Equipment rentals available.

Eagles Mere Historic Village includes a large bookstore (Eagles Mere Avenue, 570-525-3792) that includes secondhand and antique books. The Eagles Mere Borough Museum (Eagles Mere Avenue, 570-525-3155, is open weekends during the winter. The toboggan slide will run Friday to Sunday throughout February, weather permitting; $15 per hour per six-adult sled, $20 per hour per eight-adult sled. Be prepared to pull the sled up a steep hill.
