"We were clearly a team that could compete with people," first-year Wheaton Coach Sharief Hashim said, "but we just didn't close teams out. They didn't hang their heads, though, and that was big."

Wheaton's 49-26 victory over Clarksburg on Jan. 16 ended that spell. From there, the Knights won five of six -- including victories by eight over Rockville and by four over Einstein -- capped by the Paint Branch game.

Wheaton had made an average of 4.3 three-pointers per game heading into the Paint Branch game. The Knights made 11 of 23 from behind the arc that night. Travis Marcus hit five of them, en route to scoring 22 points. He leads the team in scoring at 16.1 points per game. Rolland Diers hit four from long range as he scored 17, a season high.

"The kids are doing a better job retaining the information," Hashim said. "We just started doing the little things I keep telling them about. It feels good to be peaking at the right time."

Rockville Senior's Moment

Of all the Rockville players, senior Jenn Cordero might be having the most difficult season.

Since age 9, she has been a shooting guard, but after the Rams lost 10 players from last year's team, Cordero has been thrust into the point guard role for the first time in her life.

"It's been really tough," she said.

That's why Rockville Coach Mark Crichton was so thrilled to see Cordero come through with her biggest shot of the season Friday, when her three-pointer as time expired gave the Rams a 48-47 win over Watkins Mill.

"She's doing a nice job for us," Crichton said, "and just having her hitting that shot, you can see the weight come off her shoulders."

Rockville, which improved to 6-11 with the win, designed a last-second play for leading scorer Meghan Tilghman. But when that fell apart, the ball ended up in Cordero's hands.

She had attempted two game-winners before -- once for the junior varsity as a freshman, once in a summer league game -- and both had missed. This high-arcing shot did not.

Cordero said she had trouble sleeping that night after the game, replaying it all in her head.
