Hard times are putting a shine on gold companies. Along with the rising price of the metal itself, the stock prices of major U.S. gold companies have been climbing. Since the market bottom of Nov. 20, gold company shares have soared 75 percent through Feb. 9. Five of the 10 major firms have doubled in price. Gold Reserve is up 191 percent; Golden Star Resources and Vista Gold, up 158 and 167 percent, respectively; U.S. Gold Corp. has risen 137 percent. Newmont Mining, the largest in the group based on market cap, has gained 76 percent.
