Dear Dr. Gridlock:

I'm tired of reading about how the Intercounty Connector is useless because it won't take traffic from the Capital Beltway. What about Randolph Road or Norbeck Road, or many others in that part of Montgomery County?

I recently traveled from Redland Road near Interstate 270 to New Hampshire Avenue in Cloverly, mostly on two-lane roads. I crossed the connector's right of way three times and would gladly have paid a toll for a direct high-speed route with no traffic lights.

We have an obsession with the Beltway. Outsiders reading our discussions must think everyone in Washington drives in a circle. We seem to judge transportation projects in terms of whether they will make traffic on the Beltway better or worse.

The Intercounty Connector now is beyond the decision-making stage and should be finished by early 2012. But as the debate fades into the rearview mirror, some opponents of the Purple Line say the east-west transitway should be blocked because it will have little impact on Beltway traffic.

Our transportation system is much more complicated than that.
