Shayla Fields scored 19 points yesterday to help North Carolina State beat No. 17 Virginia, 60-54, in an emotional home game for the Wolfpack.
Nikitta Gartrell added 15 points for N.C. State (11-14, 3-7 ACC), which took control midway through the second half in the fourth annual "Hoops 4 Hope" event created by longtime coach Kay Yow to raise money and awareness for cancer research.
Yow died last month, more than two decades after first having breast cancer diagnosed. In the wake of her death, the event was a sellout for the first time.
Lyndra Littles scored 15 points for the Cavaliers (19-7, 5-5), who used a 16-0 run spanning halftime to take a 38-29 lead with 13 1/2 minutes left. But the Wolfpack regrouped, getting some clutch shots late from Fields and Gartrell.
The Wolfpack also held ACC leading scorer Monica Wright to 12 points on 4-for-17 shooting.
CONNECTICUT 95, PITTSBURGH 42: In Storrs, Conn., Renee Montgomery scored 20 points and the No. 1 Huskies raced to a 19-point lead in the first 5 1/2 minutes against the No. 19 Panthers.
Maya Moore added 18 points and 12 rebounds for Connecticut (25-0, 11-0 Big East). Shavonte Zellous scored 16 points for Pittsburgh (18-5, 8-3).
ยท AUBURN 63, MISSISSIPPI ST. 58: DeWanna Bonner had 25 points and 10 rebounds for the visiting No. 5 Tigers (25-1, 10-1 Southeastern). Alexis Rack led the Bulldogs (19-7, 6-5) with 15 points and six assists.
UNC 73, GEORGIA TECH 50: Cetera DeGraffenreid scored 22 points for the No. 8 Tar Heels (22-4, 7-3 ACC), who broke the game open with a 17-2 run to open the second half. Sasha Goodlett scored 14 points for the Yellow Jackets (18-7, 5-5).
LSU 66, FLORIDA 47: Allison Hightower scored 21 points and LaSondra Barrett added 12 along with seven rebounds to help the Tigers (13-9, 6-4 SEC) upset the No. 9 Gators in Baton Rouge, La.
Sha Brooks scored 12 points for Florida (22-4, 8-3).
TEXAS 55, IOWA STATE 52: Earnesia Williams scored with 24 second left as the No. 13 Longhorns rallied to beat the 16th-ranked Cyclones in Ames, Iowa.
