Now that the top job in town is filled, residents are turning their attention to other prominent Washington positions.
On a chilly February day, 47 contenders for the office of Washington Nationals racing president took the field yesterday at Nationals Park.
The physical requirements for office appear to be more demanding than for any purely political job. The racing part of racing presidents means strength of limb and fleetness of foot. Office holders must run from right field to home plate while wearing a 45-pound costume. A Nationals spokeswoman said the candidates ranged in age from the early 20s to 50s. The Nationals' home opener is April 13 against the Phillies; the first spring training tilt is Feb. 25.
