Still Closing the Gap

The Metro board is looking for ways to close a budget deficit estimated at $29 million. They are considering $21.4 million in bus and rail service cuts. They are also weighing options to increase revenue.

The cuts include:

Eliminating overlapping bus service on 36 routes in Maryland, Virginia and the District

Net saving: $10 million

Increasing the gap between bus arrivals on 47 routes in Maryland, Virginia and the District

Net saving: $3.2 million

Running fewer trains between 6 and 7 a.m. on weekdays, evenings after 6:30, mid-day, and Saturdays all day

Net saving: $8.76 million

Closing low-usage entrances at six stations on weekends, at five stations on weekdays at 8 p.m.

Net saving: $700,000
